Description
Fresh, hot beignets are a simple, sweet treat from New Orleans, soft inside and light outside, dusted with powdered sugar.
Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- Oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- In another bowl, combine milk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
- Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut into squares.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry beignets until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy warm!
Notes
Keep the dough soft but not sticky. Add a little flour if it sticks too much. Best served warm with coffee or hot chocolate.
