Description

Fresh, hot beignets are a simple, sweet treat from New Orleans, soft inside and light outside, dusted with powdered sugar.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  2. In another bowl, combine milk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
  3. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut into squares.
  6. Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry beignets until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
  8. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

Keep the dough soft but not sticky. Add a little flour if it sticks too much. Best served warm with coffee or hot chocolate.
