Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups (300g) broccoli florets
- 2 cups (250g) mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable or sesame oil
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger (optional)
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 3 tablespoons water
- Sesame seeds for garnish
- Green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the broccoli and mushrooms: Wash broccoli florets and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Clean mushrooms and slice them about 1/4 inch thick. Have all ingredients prepped before cooking.
- Mince garlic and ginger, and mix the sauce: Mince garlic finely. Peel and grate ginger if you’re using it. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), and hoisin sauce. In a separate small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water to form a slurry.
- Blanch the broccoli (optional but recommended): Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Add broccoli florets and cook for 1-2 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp. Drain and rinse under cold water or in an ice bath.
- Stir-fry the aromatics and vegetables: Heat vegetable or sesame oil in a wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and ginger (if using) and stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add mushrooms and cook for 3-5 minutes until browned. Add broccoli and stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes.
- Add the sauce and thicken: Pour the soy sauce mixture over the vegetables and stir. Simmer for 1 minute. Re-whisk the cornstarch slurry and slowly pour it into the wok while stirring. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens. Stir in 1 teaspoon of sesame oil.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from heat. Transfer to a serving dish. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve on its own or with rice or noodles.
