A simple and quick recipe for fresh homemade bread with a soft crumb and a crisp crust.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add olive oil, salt, and flour a little at a time. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
- Let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Allow to cool before slicing.
Notes
Fresh bread is best the same day but can be stored for a few days. For longer storage, slice and freeze.
