Description

A delightful staple that brings warmth and comfort with a soft, fluffy loaf perfect for sandwiches or toast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil.
  3. Mix until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 60 minutes.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into two loaves. Place in greased bread pans.
  6. Cover and let rise again until doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool on wire racks before slicing.

Notes

Make sure the water is warm but not too hot to keep the yeast active. Kneading well is important for developing gluten.
