Description

A simple, tasty rustic bread made in a skillet, perfect for accompanying soups, salads, or sandwiches.


Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast. Stir until even.
  2. Make a small well in the flour mix. Pour in warm water and olive oil.
  3. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until you get a shaggy dough.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 to 1.5 hours).
  6. Punch down the dough, shape it into a round loaf on a floured surface.
  7. Preheat your skillet over medium heat for about 5 minutes.
  8. Place the shaped dough into the heated skillet, cover, and let it rise for 30-40 minutes until puffy.
  9. While it rises, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  10. Remove the lid and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  11. Let cool briefly, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For flavored bread, add dried herbs, olives, or cheese as desired. Ensure your dough is slightly tacky while kneading.
