Description
Quick, creamy frosting perfect for decorating sugar cookies with a mild almond and vanilla flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- ⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4½ cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup milk, plus more as needed
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- Food coloring (various colors for decorating)
Instructions
- Cream the softened unsalted butter in a medium-sized mixing bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar to the butter mixture, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl frequently.
- Pour in the ¼ cup of milk, ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract, and ½ teaspoon of almond extract. Begin mixing on low speed until incorporated. The mixture will likely be very thick.
- Continue mixing on medium speed to adjust consistency. Add more milk, one teaspoon at a time, if the frosting is too thick. Don’t overmix. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl for smoothness.
- Divide the frosting into separate bowls if using multiple colors. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and gently stir until evenly distributed. Use gel food coloring for more intense colors.
Notes
For a glossy finish, mix on medium speed for just a short time. Keep extra frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
