Description

Soft fried dough squares with a sweet glaze, perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg in a bowl.
  2. Whisk together buttermilk, egg, and melted butter in another bowl.
  3. Combine the wet and dry ingredients until just blended.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness and cut into squares.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry each square until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  7. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  8. Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla for the glaze until smooth.
  9. Dip the warm beignet squares in the glaze and let it set before serving.

Notes

Serve warm and enjoy! You can dust with extra powdered sugar if desired. Keep a close eye on oil temperature while frying.
