- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2 cups buttercream frosting (store-bought or homemade)
- Green food coloring
- Brown or dark green candies for shell pieces (M&M-style or chocolate chips)
- Black or dark icing for eyes and smile
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- Beat butter and sugar until light in another bowl. Add eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla.
- Add dry mix and milk in turns. Mix until smooth.
- Pour batter into the pan. Bake 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cake fully on a wire rack.
- Make or buy buttercream. Tint most of the frosting light green and a small amount darker green if desired.
- Frost the whole cake with light green frosting.
- Cut a small dome of cake or use a cupcake for the turtle shell top. Cover this piece with darker green frosting.
- Press brown or dark green candies into the shell piece to make shell patterns.
- Place the shell on top of the cake near the center. Use frosting to attach.
- Pipe eyes and a smile with black icing. Add small legs and a head shape with frosting.
Notes
Cool the cake completely before frosting to avoid melting the icing. Use a serrated knife to level the cake for a flat surface.
