A beautifully decorated watercolor cake with moist layers and rich buttercream frosting, perfect for any celebration.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup milk
- 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2–4 tablespoons heavy cream
- Food coloring (various colors)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Cream together the 1/2 cup softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
- Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl.
- Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
- Divide the batter evenly into the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- Beat 1 cup of softened butter in a bowl until creamy for the frosting.
- Gradually add in powdered sugar, then mix in 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and beat until light and fluffy. Add more cream if necessary.
- Once the cake layers are cool, frost the top of one layer, then place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
- Divide frosting into bowls and tint with food coloring. Use a spatula or palette knife to apply colored frosting to the cake in a watercolor effect.
- Serve and enjoy!
