Description

A beautifully decorated watercolor cake with moist layers and rich buttercream frosting, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 24 tablespoons heavy cream
  • Food coloring (various colors)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the 1/2 cup softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Beat 1 cup of softened butter in a bowl until creamy for the frosting.
  9. Gradually add in powdered sugar, then mix in 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and beat until light and fluffy. Add more cream if necessary.
  10. Once the cake layers are cool, frost the top of one layer, then place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
  11. Divide frosting into bowls and tint with food coloring. Use a spatula or palette knife to apply colored frosting to the cake in a watercolor effect.
  12. Serve and enjoy!

Notes
